Hullo... I was just passing through, when I saw a lovely post... and just had to reply...

"I'm getting quite tired of people being called hateful, intolerant, homophobes, or whatever, whenever someone doesn't agree with someone else's views."

Well, that doesn't fit the definition *I* know of for erotophobia....

http://www.glgarden.org/tlttm/erotoph.htm

"There is a lot in the Bible about Jesus being the only way, but I have to balance that out with the true sincerity of people following other religions."

There's also alot in the bible which states that the *whole* of the law is fulfilled thus : love thy neighbor as yourself...

...::shrug:: Mine not to debate...

"But Forgiven has a right to post what he believes to be true without being labeled a hatemonger, just as Rahiim has a right to post his beliefs. Even the grand wizard of the KKK should be able to voice what he truly believes."

Huzzah!

"What if someone posted that they believed pedophiles should have absolutely no contact with kids. Is that poster being hateful? Intolerant? Why? For having an opposing opinion?"

Ignorant, IMHO... but I'd rather discuss the rationale with them...

"What about someone who said gay relationships should be illegal? Hateful? Intolerant? Homophobic? Why? Because you don't agree with him?"

Hateful, regardless of intent, IMO - law is, essentially violence, and thusly this view would fit the criterion of 'danger to self and/or others.'

Not neccisarily homophobic, though, unless it is projected as hatred of the people to be affected by this person's proposed institutionalized violence...

"What are we all supposed to do here? Put flowers in our hair, wear love beads..."

IMHO, not a bad idea. :)

"I don't mind telling you all, that this whole thing has me really bummed out. Intolerant. Hateful. Homophobic. You guys can take all your labels and shove 'em up your collective asses. How's that for being hateful and intolerant?"

Well, rectal penetration involved, and as the person self-shoving is, naturally, of their own gender... I take it 'homophobic' is out. :)

I hold that a label, properly defined, can be a good thing. The research on ACTUAL homophobia (defined at link above, here summarized as 'negative emotions towards the *individuals* of a particular orientation, here, homosexuality') illustrates several illuminating things on the psychological mechanisms... repressive projection of one's own internal desires, in fact...

...makes talking to paederotophobic trolls all that more amusing, IMHO - but once the term loses its meaning, so too is the insight into its mechanisms lost... repressive projective splitting is an inaccurate and unhelpful diagnosis when the actual mechanism is, say, the logical fallacy of equivocation... the most common mechanism of that which is errantly termed paederotophobia; sex=rape.

Asserting and proving that there is a tangible difference between orientation and rape will mean little to nothing to the paederotophobe - their response is, to quote the most paederotophobic person I know... "that's just sick," abandoning all other arguments (poor girl - she's had to come to terms with the fact that her erotophobia is against everything she believes in... I figure by the time I come out to her, her sister legally adult, she'll have had time to cope... not to mention the ensuing societal changes...). Telling a parent afraid that their children will be raped "you're just projecting your own desires" - well, informing them of that is seldom if ever helpful whether or not they are erotophobes, except as a TRULY fun thing to do in an otherwise valueless flamewar (complete with pages upon pages of references), but will be totally meaningless even if they take you seriously, and find through hard introspection that they do not, in fact, have a desire to rape their children - even if they periodically find their children arousing...

::sigh:: I've babbled on too long. Cheerio!
