Hi frank - My simple answer is that those who are still living will miss having that person in their life every day. We are selfish animals, us humans, and when we lose a loved one, knowing that they are not suffering any more, we turn to ourselves, the ones who are still alive. Actually, in my church, funerals are celebratory. While people will terribly miss those who are gone, we rejoice in the life that they did have, and in the eternal life that they are passing into.
