Maybe one should look back one war before the Nazis. World War One. Germany was crushed, and insult was added to injury. The Allied forces let hate determine the Versailles treaty and made Germany suffer.

This increased the hatred held in Germany (Hatred multiplies hatred) and allowed an upstart like Hitler to influence the nation.

That's what led to the second world war in the first place, MLK's words rang true.

For World War II, after Germany was defeated, the Allies didn't go and execute every Nazi. They showed mercy. (Well, except Russia.)

After WWII, the Allies displayed forgiveness which diffused hatred.

I'd have to agree with you on the point that one cannot win battles through love alone, though, but one must not be devoid of love, lest contempt lead to one's own destruction.
