... he succeeded to a large extent. He found a violent, militant movement that was bent on using terror and extremism to effect a just cause and he turned it on its head. He almost single handedly changed the collective mind of a generation. He used love and and firm, unbending tolerance to effect the kind of change that might never otherwise have been achieved. He took a powder keg and changed it into a controlled, non-lethal burn. If he or someone like him had not been on the national stage at that critical moment in U.S. history, I think we would probably have been doomed to horrible race riots and a Palestinian-like uprising. |
