I'd hoped that if I made some highly didactic remarks about Roman homosexuality, I'd be able to draw you out of hiding.

Now that you're around, I can put in the disclaimer that my knowledge of Roman homosexuality is based entirely on secondary references at this point, so any questions about the Romans should be referred over to you. :)

My question to you (which you may have missed earlier) is about opposition to homosexuality in the Roman army. Now, I know - from both you and one of the secondary sources I ran across - that soldiers weren't allowed to sleep with each other (makes perfect sense; fits right in with the Roman opposition to sex between adult male citizens), but were there any regulations concerning soldiers sleeping with slaves? That would make a difference in the debate over the centurion passage.

You also mentioned references in Caesar and information on legion executions - I'd love to know the references to those, if you have them on hand.

Would love some Cato references too. Have you read Cato the Younger's fascinating account of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius? It gave me a yearning to learn Latin, so that I could produce a translation of it for children.
