I'm coming to the discussion rather late, I suppose. It's been some time since I've read any Bonhoeffer, but I seem to recall that the passage Bach quoted from Romans 13 is precisely the one used in Germany to quell any Christian opposition to Hitler. He was "democratically elected" and therefore had been placed in a position of authority by God. (In fact, he was so "godly" that he declared "a thousand year Reich" -- the reference to Revelation 20 is much clearer in the German.) And then of course, we can look at the American rebellion of 1776. "No taxation without representation" -- does that sound familiar? How does that jive with "if you owe taxes, pay taxes"? History shows that the rebellion against God's appointed ruler was at least temporarily (226 years and counting) successful. Dirk |
