The film was a bit vague about certain issues but the book (which came first) spelled things out in far greater detail. Not only was there a romantic relationship - it was sexually consumated. One of the major subplots was the conflict the man felt because of his sexual attraction to the boy and his determination not to yield to it. That he finally did enter into a physical relationship was presented as neutrally - leaving the reader free to judge whether it was positive or negative. The boy, by the end of the story, clearly did not feel abused or molested. He in fact felt rescued and loved. |
