I didn't read the book, like AI. But speaking from the perspective of having only watched the movie, I don't think anything about the relationship was made ABUNDANTLY clear. How far it went was left to the viewer to interpret. What WAS made abundantly clear was how the townspeople "assumed" the worst had happened without any evidence. Much like the way you have "assumed" that Splash was refering to a romantic relationship when he spoke of boylove. (And the way you "assumed" much about my lifestyle in a previous post) Boylove (a nicer word than pedophile) is about more than sex. The majority of boylovers have a deep caring and love for children that "spills over" into a sexual attraction as well. This has been documented, it's not just me saying it. So what many boylovers try to do, including myself, is to allow the love and caring to show while controlling the sexual attraction. I don't know if the movie makers wanted to portray Gibson as sexually attracted to the boy or not. But he certainly loved the boy. So at least in that sense, he was a boylover. Dakota |
