The Funeral of Darius

The coffin lay, barren in the mist of a beautiful flower coronations. The church is filled to capacity. Many of men and indeed, a few boys had sounded wonderful eulogies of this man they once knew. Yet, the audience is jovial, the moment is not solemn, for most of the eulogies were of joy, of happiness, of the many lives that were made so much brighter from the encounter with the man called, Daruis. He was loved by so many, revered by most, hated by none. The moment wanders, an aurora of anxiousness emanates from the crowd. The priest, sensing the anxiety, prepares to address the crowd. He reaches the pulpit and was about to speak, when the roar of an engine, destroys the fragile calm within the church…

Outside, the man is in great haste, he blips the throttle and three hundred plus angry horsepower of the Porsche, answer instantly… with perfect heel and toe, he deftly down shifts the car. He jerks the steering wheel abruptly to the left; whilst, simultaneously pulling on the parking brake. The car drifts and began a full slide, sideways, stopping perfectly, equidistant from the car in front and the car behind. He had stopped in the last remaing parking space in front of the church. The man blips the throttle one final time and let the engines dies, he then jumps out, leaving the keys inside. He rushes towards the church, pausing briefly to look back at his chariot. It had stopped, exactly six inches, parallel to the curb. He smiles, expecting nothing less.

The door to the church is flung opened, the crowd stares and without a word being uttered he hurries to the front…then, with the irreverence that has characterize his life, he says “please excuse my lateness”; then, he climbs into the coffin and lays down one last time, forever.

Yes, folks, as in my life, I shall be late for my own funeral…
