It seems that this could be taken the wrong way. You see, I have become depressed and have been unhappy most of my life. I know in my heart that this is a sin. God wants me to have joy in life. The point of these verses, I think, is that we should find joy in any situation. Life may seem hard or painful, but if we look at it from the right perspective we can find peace in it. After all, if we are in God's will then we know that whatever happens is the best thing that could possibly happen. We should be thrilled! The Bible says this over and over, but it seems that we still can't figure it out. This world should always fade in the light of God's glory. We become truly sad when we forget what is really important. So, yes, it is certainly true that our lives will be spent in trials and that we should not focus our lives on making ourselves happy. However, true joy and peace will come if we focus on pleasing God.
