No, it would be sin if he ATE cake if God told him he couldn't have it. In the Garden of Eden, God din't tell Adam and Eve not to WANT to eat the forbiddem fruit. In fact He never mentioned a thing about DESIRING the fruit, which leads me to believe he was not as concerned with wanting the fruit as you are. He said don't EAT the fruit. And I might also point out that the Bible never said Eve sinned while the serpent was TEMPTING her with the fruit. She did not sin when she was THINKING about how nice the fruit looked. She sinned when she ATE the fruit.
