Why does there have to be sin?

I'm really not one to answer this question. It's a big one. All I can say for now is that our God is a VERY VERY Holy God of many attributes: Love, Justice, Peace, Mercy, Compassion, etc. The sin of mankind began with rebellion against God; therefore, making us "unclean" in comparison to such a Holy God. God's Justice demands payment of sin (the wages of sin is death). But "God so loved the world..." -- God's Love is so great that He found a way to cover our sins (so we could be with Him), paying sin's penalty of death (John 3:16). I don't know why certain things are the way they are, but it does seem that all these things were put into place so that God could remain who He is (with all those unchanging attributes) while still having a relationship with mankind. I know this is a very small answer to such a big question, but I'm just not capable (or even able) of going much further than this. I always tend to think of it along the lines of "God is Love" -- meaning that He loves us all so much that He couldn't allow non-love to threaten the Kingdom, so when non-love appeared, He had to get rid of it (through death), while making a way for us to not be taken down with our non-loving ways, and making a way so that no one would have to worry about non-love's appearance ever again -- ultimately doing away with any chance of it showing up again. Sounds stupid, maybe -- but it's deep. Think about it. "God is Love." Peace.
