The present level of paranoia in society has led to a situation where the counselling community has generally been forced to adopt a policy of reporting possible child sex offenders to the authorities. The rules vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but you do need to be cautious and to get a clear statement from any possible counsellor before telling them anything significant. Note that this does apply to church ministers as well. I'd suggest you post on Boychat for more information and links to the present situation - I know what it is here, but that doesn't help you a lot! That said, the support I received from my church community for a substantial period was extremely valuable, and to be out to at least a few in the real world is a major gain. But it is not a risk free strategy - some of us have got badly burned when we have come out to people. |
