I went to a psychiatrist a long time ago about my pedophilia. He was kind and compassionate, but it really wasn't very helpful. He mainly wanted to work on controlling my attractions. I felt I could do that on my own and save myself $60 an hour, so I stopped going after only a few visits. I saw a psycologist about a year and a half ago for some addictive compulsions I was having. I didn't mention my pedophilia, even though I'm fairly sure that played a part in my problems. Even so, he was quite helpful. I just didn't want to go down that path of bringing my attractions to boys into the mix.

I'm not a lawyer, but I believe a councelor is only required to report actual instances of abuse a patient tells them about. I don't think they are required to report possible dangers of future abusive behavior that they may suspect or believe for whatever reason. But this doesn't mean they might not still feel it is their duty to do so.

But dangers of being outed aside, it will be very hard to find a therapist that can help due to the wide range of differing beliefs in the area of pedophilia. And not all therapists have much training in that area. If you really feel the need for therapy, you might want to make up a short list of questions to ask prospective councelors and call them first. (From a pay phone because of caller ID) Then you could get some feel for their views and experience in treating pedophiles. Good luck.
