Maybe you might want to see if he'd like to do a Bible study with you outside of church, or meet for breakfast or lunch once a week or so -- just so the two of you can start to develop a friendship, and so you can find out if he'd make a good mentor for you. In the process, you may find out what things he's struggling with and then you can pray for him about these things, and help see him through. And hopefully he'll do the same for you. Though, pay attention to where he places his attention. Does he really seem to love God, or does he place other things in his life above God? This should help show you whether his Christianity is true or not. If he does appear true, it's possible that God may have placed him in your life for a reason. You most likely know the reason if God's been dealing with you about some things. I'll keep you in my prayers, but it's also important that you stay in the Word and in prayer about these things.
