Personally, I have avoided using the term Young Friend because I have chosen not to seek out this type of relationship... building a special relationship with one boy. This WAS something that I did in the past, but have long since given up because my heart kept breaking... Hi Ben, I've also avoided getting too involved with any one particular boy since being heartbroken about my last YF. I think I've learned from that relationship, and now I try not to play favorites (except for my nephew). I try to make a little difference in the lives of each child I work with. But I keep my distance. No more getting too close, or letting a child get too close to me emotionally. I think this is the mature thing to do, and allows us to minister more effectively to the youth around us. Having a YF can be very similar to having a wife -- like Paul says, our focus will be on pleasing the wife (or YF) and not on doing God's will. I know Who I'd rather spend my time with. Splash |
