But when I was 18 I was on a boating trip on a river and the boat I was in tipped over while navigating some log-clogged rapids. I was trapped under a pile of logs for a couple of minutes while I struggled to get free of the rushing water.

Those 2 minutes are still two of the most vividly horrible and terrifying of all my memories. Perhaps if I'd stayed under long enough for my brain to start shutting down I would have eventually calmed down.

But in my experiece, the process of almost drowning was indeed horrifying.
