1) The Old Testament has no doubt that God acts in judgement of nations - both the Jews (Jeremiah, Judges) and others (Amos 1 and 2, Jonah, Nahum) 2) Jesus makes it clear that the rejection of him by the Jews will lead to the destruction of Jerusalem (Mark 13) Therefore the questions are: 1) Was 911 specifically because God has removed his protection from America? (And is there really any reason for the USA to believe they have been specially protected?) 2) Is whether the behaviours which Falwell and Robertson are specifically identifying as the reason why God has acted to remove his protection actually the ones that God is targetting? Amongst the planks in the church's eye should be listed the failure to condemn divorce and remarriage as strongly as homosexuality.... Note however that the phrasing of the Falwell letter - 'the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle' does make it clear that they are NOT targetting those of us who are 'fellow conservative Christians who struggle with (endeavouring to forsake) homosexuality' - which appears to be Sonia's beef. |
