It's not uncommon in charismatic circles to hear people ascribe every misfortune that we experience to a particular evil spirit, even the spirit of the common cold.

It doesn't seem true to me. The bible says that all creation is in pangs of suffering right now waiting for redemption because of the decay brought on by sin (Rom 8:18-25). It doesn't say it's in pangs of suffering because it's been riddled through by evil spirits.

Satan tempted Eve to disobey God, but it was Eve's and Adam's action that brought about the Fall, not the Devil's directly. And because of the Fall, the physical world itself is now one of pain. It's in the Laws of Physics. Cancer, for instance, happens because of the currently corrupt Laws of Physics, not because of some spirit of cancer.

The demons seek to bring on destruction, but there's enough sin inside us all anyway and enough general state of brokenness in the universe because of the Fall that I don't think we can blame every bad thing that happens on them.

That's how I tend to see it, anyway, and why I reject the idea of a "spirit of homosexuality". But there's still the idea of temptation to deal with, and that does seem to be within the grasp of evil spirits.

But I'm no expert on spirits nor a prophet. What if I was wrong and the spirits did have a real direct effect on physical phenomena, apart from tempting? Is it possible?

The other reason why I disregard the notion of spirits of homosexuality is that the theory of homosexuality as a natural variance in sexuality makes sense, being consistent with the general notion of biological statistical variability. Some people are more aggressive than others, some are taller than others, some are warmer to touch than others, some are more attracted to members of the opposite sex than others. I don't think there is a spirit of tallness.
