to coincide because we believe in a God of love who doesn't stop us doing things for the sake of it, but rather because it is objectively the right thing to do. Thus it is fairly obvious that adultery is wrong - and it is banned in the bible, though not very strongly by society today. A much greater conflict comes over the issue of gay relationships; the traditional teaching of the bible and EVERY other religion that would want to take seriously as a moral guide is to reject gay relationships. Modern society has rejected that view - which makes for a severe problem for those of us who hold to the traditional view. But on the whole one can expect the bible and consensus of social science to coincide; when they don't we have the choice of waiting for science to come round to our view (which it often does after a bit) or abandoning the tradition because the modern view is otherwise......
