Religion and environment

I often puzzle over why people acknowledge a certain religion instead of a different one?

I mean: religions are very geographically located. In Asia there are Buddhism and Confucianism, in Arabic countries Islam, in North Europe Protestantism, in South Europe Catholicism, in America different kinds of Christianity...

This obviously indicates that the choice of a particular religion is not that much a matter of personal convictions, but rather is due to environment and upbringing - otherwise we would approximately find the same percentage of Christians, Muslims, Buddhists and so on in all countries. On the other hand, to believe or not to believe in God is probably a true question of personal faith or conviction.

What do you guy think? If we were born in Arabia, don't you think we would be Muslims?
