No denomination that is, until I encountered catholicism.

Yup; it's a roman creation. Check out their statements on the whole 'sunday=sabbath' thing, too - it ain't the 7th day, y'know.

Christianity predates the bible. The bible was compiled many years after christianity had flourished. Therefore the bible cannot possibly be the definitive authority on christianity.

By my understanding of the definition, only the heretic Jesus could possibly be the definitive authority thereon...

These men decided which books they felt were inspired by God and which werent. Therefore our modern bible is the result of a committee decision made many years ago by men whose names are lost in history.

Oh, no - they're NOT all lost; the emperor Constantine of Rome was foremost. Realizing that Christianity was becoming a threat to his empire, he declared a single hand-picked set to be 'official Christianity' - and set about killing non-Emperor-decreed Christians with more fervor than his predecessors.

...it's enough to cause a person to lose faith in the church... and losing faith in the church, good sir, might just be enough to cause a person to find faith in God.

...but you can actually find out a fair bit about the political maneuverings and backstabbings, if you look. Council of Nicea, if I recall correctly.

How can we trust the authority of those people who put together the bible, if we know nothing about them?

A WHOLE lot better than you can if you find out about them, trust me. Despite it all, though, I really have to feel that it kept a surprising amount. Not that I'm endorsing that one tiny little tidbit which contradicts the broad whole (can't think of any yet, but if it goes against 'love your fellow being as yourself,' I ain't a-gonna give it credence, m'self... dude was rather plain. Dude also made it fairly clear what he thought of holier-than-thou preachers who spent their time asserting the sub-humanity of the prostitutes, thieves, and other such pariahs which he hung out with...

It's enough to make one proud to be the lowliest pariah on the face of this earth, and a heretic to boot.) ;)

...but, each to their own views, in light of the fiddling which you have begun to illustrate. Heck, even John Paul I (the singular pope of God, IMO, executed for serving the 'wrong' master) asserts that one's conscience must come before the Church, in his declaration of religions freedom.
