I think Christian Bale is maybe just a few years younger than me. I remember seeing the making of the film on TV, he comes from the south coast of England I belive & would've loved to have met him as a kid. His role in the film, is excellent, played with real emotion of the situations of the time. He & Spielberg got on very well I believe during the making of the film. Haven't seen "American Psycho", but he is another example of a child actor successfully entering the adult film role. There was also a TV movie called "The Leaving of Liverpool", portraying lives of children sent to Australia during the WWII & their treatment by their so called foster carers & some abuse whilst staying with the Church. There is a very emotional scene where the deaf boy is his so hard by a teacher at school that he becomes deaf in his other ear. It doesn't get better for him. He's abused by a priest & drowns in a Gravel pit swimming late one night. The main charachter survives & grows up to join the Socialist movement (still at only 16/17 I guess, played by the same boy) & demonstrates against the goverment for the feeling felt by general workers. The end song is sang by John Lennon "Working class hero", I found it on tape in a Library & now have my own copy of the song. Don't think I got a chance to record the whole film, but it's a must see. Another TV Movie recommendation "Uncle Tom". Maybe only available in the UK, try Amazon.co.uk Best regards MF72 |
