...try reading "Something Happened" byt Joseph Heller (of Catch-22 fame) A fairly difficult read but it offers an interesting perspective into a man's mind. By all accounts he should be happy, but as he confesses every negative aspect of his existance to the reader he becomes more and more pathetic. Like all human beings, he's full of foibles and idiosynchrosies. He makes a decent living, but is afraid of people at work and hates the office politics. He has a family, but they all seem to have something against him, the wife has a drinking problem and the daughter is violently contrary. The only thing he loves in his life is his son, who seems just as afraid of life as the protagonist is. Then of course... something happens. Be sure to read it till the end. Like I said, it's a tough read, very densely written, but it's affected me. If one book can deliver an ultimate message of disillusionment, this is it |
