Mormons believe that John Smith was visited by an angel who told him about the location of some writings written by a man named Mormon who lived in the US prior to Columbus' discovery of America. The writings contained a new gospel, the story of Jesus' dealings with the Native Americans after his resurrection. John Smith claims to have translated those writings and created the Book of Mormon. He was put on trial where it was discovered that he did not know any of the languages he claimed to have translated the book from, and he was exiled. But by then he had followers and was able to take his followers with him and found the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (otherwise known as mormons). You can get the Book of Mormon for free by calling a certain 800 number (I dont remember what it is, but occasionally you will see commercials about it on tv). In the preface it explains some of these things, but be warned that by ordering the Book of Mormon, you are adding your address and phone number to their database and Mormons will surely come visit you over and over again from that day forth. |
