The Gospel of John 1:1. "In the beginning was the Logos, the Logos was with God and the Logos was God."

Keeping in mind that from the time of Plato and Aristotle (according to Liddell-Scott) the Greek word "Logos" meant more than mere "word" but "Reason" as well. In this sense, the verse could (and some think should) be translated "In the beginning was the Reason, the Reason was with God, and God was the Reason."

Hence, the Father is greater than Jesus as the Father's Logos/Reason, and yet they are of the same substance, since the "reason" for a thing can't be divorced or separated from the thing's existence. So, as they are of the same substance, they are one and the same.

Likewise, from our Scriptures, the sense that we get for the Incarnation of God's Reason into human flesh is to fulfill the spiritual need we have that only God Himself could fulfill in the way that He did.

And I'm sorry about getting into my professor mode so quickly on this.
