Scholars have been trying to answer that question for centuries, and I doubt it will be solved here. But my own view is that God is the creator of the universe and everything in it. He created humans to have dominion over the Earth and to fellowship with. He gave us free will because fellowshiping with robots that have no choice isn't very fulfilling. But since we screwed it up, He had to make a way for us unholy humans to fellowship with Him who is Holy. That is why Jesus came. Jesus is God in the flesh, having the attributes of God but the limitations of humans. (Hunger, fatigue, etc) The Holy Trinity is not fully understandable to us, but I have heard it compared to water. Water can be liquid, solid, or gas, but is still the same H2O.

But the bottom line is that God cannot be deciphered like some mathmatical equation. In order to really KNOW God, you have to go to the source, God Himself. He designed it that way. So although there is nothing wrong with asking people about God, and might help you understand a little about Him, or at least what others think about Him, the only way to truly have a personal relationship with Him is to deal with Him one on one, with no intermediaries.
