It boggles my mind to think of eternity in heaven or hell. It is such a long time. It seems that several issues have been raised by this thread so I'll throw in my two cents here. It only makes sense that if you go to heaven then it would be forever, however, God reseves the right to kick people out of heaven as He sees fit. Same applies for hell, except God reserves the right to pull someone out of hell as he sees fit. Probably not done on a regular basis. It is interesting that the the Bible isn't more clear on the subject.

In some of the other responses a question was raised about different levels of heaven and hell. Quotes were made from the bible about how you cannot earn a higher level in heaven. That makes sense. Other quotes were made about how some people were granted higher status in heaven. This makes sense also. I suspect that a person's deeds will put him in heaven but not gain him status. I further suspect that a person who not only has deeds but has a relationship that puts him very close to God may influence what God decides to do with that person. If a person has such a close relationship with God that God wants him close by then it will be so. It is the relationship with God that would allow(not earn) someone to have status in heaven. Let's face it, if someone has that close a relationship then he is bound to perform such wonderfull deeds.

Hope I answered your questions and more. I probably should have responded in several different sub threads but I'm lazy and this way was easier.
