I mentioned that although there were a few cases of atrocities committed by Americans during Vietnam, and almost all involved were punished, there were far more committed by the Viet Cong that were never publicised because of their frequency,

I dont know where you get this information from, but it is inaccurate. The fact is that in Vietnam horrible atrocities were committed by everyone involved, and there is no evidence that one side did more than the other. I know a vietnam veteran who told me the story of how he was forced to slaughter a village, along with all the women and children there. Why did he do this? because someone from the village spotted them, and no one could know that they were in the area. Word could not get out, or their own lives would be at risk. In order to save the lives of his troops, the commander had to order them to slaughter all the women and children and burn down the village. This situation is not so black and white like people like to potray it. The fact is that had they not slaughtered all of those innocent people then chances are that the person who told me this story would not be alive to tell it, he wouldve been slaughtered instead. Whether the decision was moral or not is debateable, but the fact is that moral or not, that decsion was illegal. The person who told me this story should have served time for following an unlawful order, and the commander shouldve recieved the death penalty. But neither of them are or have ever been in trouble. The fact is that so many attrocities happened that the vast majority went unpunished. Remember, this was the war in which the US introduced the world to biological weapons like Agent Orange, and inhumane weapons like napalm and flame throwers. It wasnt pretty, there were countless atrocities from both sides, and I believe that the vast majority of the atrocities went unpunished.
