Jesus wasn't a particularly pious person either, by the standards of the day. In fact, He quite often put down the most pious, the Pharasees. Being a Christian isn't about singing the right songs, or quoting the right scripture, or saying the righr words. It's about a personal one on one relationship with God. How you worship is betweeen you and God. I'm reminded of a song I heard a long time ago by a blind Christian singer named Ken Medema. I'm sorry I can't remember all the words, but it's about 2 people who go in to church one day. One is dressed in his good church clothes, sings all the hymns from memory, and basically does all the right things in the service. The other is dressed shabbily and is whispered about among the other churchgoers for having a bad reputation. He doesn't sing the hymns and doesn't follow along in the scripture reading. All he does is cry and ask God's forgiveness for his many sins. The last verse of the song goes something like this. "Two men went into church that bright Sunday morn. One left slightly wrinkled, the other left reborn."
