What is the HUGE difference in wearing loose boxers and being completely nude? Not really that much.

Those cotton boxers, and even the halfbreed of boxer/breifs by hanes are oh so comfortable. And also, you will have personal security of never being caught off guard. Perhaps company coming over, ect. It's more convenient in more ways that one.

I mean, really, the only difference is what you can see, not what you can feel. So, why not make that almost non existent sacrifice and have him wear boxers?
