The Old Testament was for a time prior to the coming of the Messiah. God provided laws for the benefit of His people (the 12 tribes). These laws were very explicit beginning with The Ten Commandments followed by the laws contained in the books of Leviticus & Deuteronomy. The laws regarding food were for the benefit of the physical health of His people. It is now known why pork in particular was forbidden as a food i.e. the potential harm from Trichinosis (not sure of the spelling). There were many other animals, birds and sea creatures which people were forbidden to eat, no doubt for very good reasons because God knows everything and is a God of mercy as well as a God of justice. Now, after the birth of Jesus Christ it is a time of God's grace and the discussion of what happens to the laws is written about in the New Testament. The practice of circumcision was the catalyst for this discussion. More later..... |
