Is that you should help him as much as you are able. That means dont go beyond what you can afford, he needs to face the consequences of what he did. But you should stand by him and hear him out and see what he has to say about the charges. He is still your friend and its unfair to judge him without hearing him out first. Maybe he didnt do it, and what he needs most is someone who will believe him and stand by his side. Or maybe he did do it and regrets it deeply and needs someone who will forgive him and stand by him. Of course, theres always the chance he did it and regrets only having been caught and in that case Im not sure what the proper reaction is. But at least give him the benefit of the doubt. As a friend, I see nothing wrong with helping him as much as you are able, but I wouldnt go out of my way to pay money I cant afford for someone else's stupidity.
