In reply to How do you keep your yf relationships healthy? submitted by tigris on 2002-12-23 14:27:45, Monday

I notice that the farther I bring my relationships with a yf away from a God centered one, the more difficult it is to keep my feelings in check. I can be close with God and my yf and have no guilt when I put my arms around my yf, or rub his back, ect. I feel no guilt because I have no inappropriate thoughts. And as long as I do not ignore God, it stays that way.

I notice that, every now and then, I might stray from that formula. For instance, a few weeks ago, one of my yf started getting a bit crude. His mother, who only is a mother by name, rented him GTA3. The boy is nine and he is playing a game that involves killing, stealing, running prostitutes, running drugs, robbing banks, ect. As a video game enthusiast I was more excided about playing the game than I was concerned about how it would effect my yf. That very week, he started cussing more, making sexual references to women (nothing nasty, but still inappropriate for a 9yo), and disrespecting his grandparents, whom are his legal guardians, and just plain acting up. At first, I was foolish, and just thought to myself that it was a sign he was growing up. I would not even react in a negative way when he would utter the S word. As this progressed, I noticed my feelings were becoming more and more hard to control around him. This was the same time I noticed that when I would think of conversing with God, while I was around my yf, I felt ashamed. This was because I was watching my yf become more worldly and less Godly, and I tolerated it.

After self analysis from such experiences, I believe that my worldly self hopes that if I allow my yf to become more wordly, he would also become sexual. This, I believe is the devil's game plan for me, for now anyway.

To defeat your enemy, you must know his tactics. Always stay one step ahead. And our Heavenly Father gives us the tools to do so.

When in doubt, go to God....

In Christ,
RF
