Chatroom safety - How can you tell Troll from Boy?

Me & Rattata got involved in a very long 4 way conversation yesterday with this person & his gf online. Using all internet safety rules, I did not release any personal details to him or her, or ask for any details from them. The male in the conversation, claimed to be bi & was making suggestions to me which I dismissed, but also got involved in the domestic between him & his former gf. She wanted to me to tell him that she hated him for being bi & splitting with her, while still wanting to be his friend. This went on for ages. The guy wants 2 become my bf & she is happy for the two of us but still hates him. She got chatting to Rattata & gave him her number he did the same, I refused to release my number to him & changed the access details in my account (after approving him as a friend). He has since sent me love messages from him & her. Fortunately they live too far away for me to visit (not that I'd do something that stupid anyway). But how can I tell if these two are genuine??? Me & Rattata discussed it at great length last night, often laughing about that the two of them had said to us (some comments were explicit). If these guys are trolls, how can I be able to tell???
