...there is a lot for you to uncover in the way of parallels, metaphors and motifs. As I mentioned in one of my other posts, the prison parallel with Marty (Howie's father) and Big John is brilliant, but is only one of several parallels drawn between these two characters. The L.I.E. itself is the most obvious metaphor in the movie. And 'smell' is one of the numerous motifs used throughout - Howie smelling his mother's perfume, the starch in his father's shirt, Big John's cologne from Casablanca, etc. And beyond all this is the story itself, which has many layers and perspectives that shine through. Enjoy! Come back and post any time if you’d like to bounce that which you discover off me for a BL opinion. I, for one, would appreciate a non-BL perspective on the numerous layers of L.I.E.. J Come away, O human child, to the waters of the wild, with a fairy hand in hand, for the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand. |
