There is nothing unique here. You are simply perpetuating the old myths of the abuser/abused cycle and the weak, socially inadecuate pedophile. You're better off destroying it and starting over. For next time: 1. choose a topic you do know about so you dont have to go out and do all this research then waste your time getting it all wrong. 2. If you are going to do research, then do it all BEFORE you start writing. 3. use things other than sex to get your point across. 4. and probably most important (Im sure you were taught this in class). Know your audience. (what kind of person do you expect enjoys watching a movie where they know they will see graphic incestuous sex scenes, and is this the same type of person to whom you wanted to make your point?). As was demonstrated in the movie "happiness", evoking sympathy for a rapist is not going to work. If you want people to sympathize then you cant make his crimes so serious. Take the animated movie about moses for example (sorry, I dont recall the name right now). We all know that Moses was a murderer before being called by God. How much sympathy would the author had gotten if he had depicted the murder as a strangling, stabbing, or stoning? It wouldve ruined the character, and the target audience (in this case children) wouldn't have gotten the point. So, what did he do? he had the murder be less premeditated without removing his responsability. We can feel sympathy for a guy causing someone else's death accidentally (though it was still his fault) in a moment of anger, we arent going to feel sympathy for him strangling the life out of someone. Had the character in "happiness" committed a less serious crime (perhaps giving into temptations and looking at illegal porn online), there is a good chance the audience could be moved to sympathy. But when his crime is rape...forget it, no one is going to sympathize with that. |
