Hi GiveLove,

I wasn't here very much when you first visited; nice to meet you now.

The thing you say about not knowing if God is there or if you're good enough to hear from him - that's half like something I've sometimes thought. For me, I don't have anything happening in my own life that 'proves' God, while other people say they have things happening that do prove God to them. But I don't think that's because I'm not good enough; I think it's either (a) God is an invention and everyone else is imagining it, or (b) I'm not listening. If I don't hear God, then I assume that it's up to me to listen more. But like you, sometimes I don't think I should have to try, because if God is real, it would be more obvious... And then, just when I've been thinking like this for a long time, I find myself recently in a group of new people, and the sense of the presence of God suddenly appeared, out of nowhere. I wasn't looking, and then suddenly, through other believers, and even through something I said as well in that group, God made himself known again. So, then it's not up to me to search after all! Instead it's just a case of being in the right place, with the right people, at the right time. We find God much more when we are together than we do alone. And so that's why friendship is important for me. But like you, it's not easy for me to make good close friends. This recent experience happened with a group of new people that I was only with for a week, and probably won't meet many of them again. But with people I see regularly, it's harder!

I read somewhere recently that in modern life with commuting large distances to work, TV, the web, email and instant messaging,

"we know more people, but we have fewer friends."
How true that is!

Finding good, close friends is something that lots of us have found difficult; all I can say is keep open to all the opportunities. For me, one thing that has helped me more than any other was living in a christian community for three years. I'm also now living in a house with other people, rather than living on my own which I used to do before.

Do keep in touch with us here, and let us know how things go.

With Christian love,

Jules
