TV Drama - Real Men - Part 1 Summary

For those of you who didn't catch this drama program (FICTIONAL), centering around a police investigating child abuse in a care home, I have complied the following notes. The program opens to the re-opening of a missing child case from 3 years ago. The cops stop by a local gym & speak to a man about his car, which they saw was recently re-sprayed. The guy panics & runs home to commit suicide in his loft, before the police get there. No apparent reason, except it emerges that he was once a member of a care home as a child & was abused. Graphic accounts are given by another former victim along with a few names of those involved. Next scene, a young boy's mum is taken into a psychiatric hospital for long-term treatment. The boy is one of the main charachters "Russell 12yo". He is taken into care under protest. Where things look okay & he gets to know the carers & other boys. A convicted serial paedo is interviewed by police in prison, a few days before his release date & says he was in the area at the time the missing boy disappeared 3 years ago, but they get nothing out of him & he is released on schedule. The cops obtain files from the care home & find out that he was also one of the residents as a child. Meanwhile the guy gets released from prison & drums up local support, accusing one of his fellow former residents of child abuse. The missing boy's father is also present, but the victims quick responce is to inform the gang that the main trouble maker is the convicted predator & not him. The predator, then arrives on scene of the current care home, where he knows the owner (who was also in charge of the previous home as when he was a child). The owner leaves him in the company of a young boy in one of the rooms (this boy is Lester about 12yo), while he escorts Russell away. Lester arrives back later that night, tells Russell "it's no big deal, they pay me for what I do & if they want to be pervs it up to them". He gets into bed with Russell for the duration of the night, for comfort. Russell & Lester go to visit Russell's house, which has been reposessed & they trash the place in anger. Meanwhile, the police soon discover that the owner of the care home has been accused of offenses in the past, which were swept unknown at the time & start to mount an investigation. Meanwhile, Russell is befriended by one of the female careworkers & unknown to him, she is also a predator & in on the game. She is soon joined by the owner. Next scene see's Russell in the bath, washing himself, ducking his head underwater, trying to wash away the feeling of what just took place. When he comes out of the bath (fully clothed in this scene), a boy taunts him about his "fishy breath", which results in Russell beating the crap out of this kid. The next day, the police arrive & interview three boys from the home as part of their ongoing enquires. The boys are accompanied by the female predator during the interviews, Lester says nothing, for what we know, it doesn't bother him, whats going on. He's described by the police as a "career prostitute". Having been abused in care by the same man since he was 4yo. A second boy, comes out with a comment out of the blue "owner, didn't touch me", when the cops try to question him, the woman shuts them up. Russell, looks very edgy & nervous during his interview, looks at the woman who molested him & says nothing. The female Social worker believes that the boys are being molested there, so they arrest the owner of the care home. Lester panicks & threatens Russell "What did you tell them, you must've said something". Russell hit Lester & runs out of the room. Lester's world is crashing down around him. A female former resident who was questioned earlier, tells the cops that she was attacked & raped by a police officer one night, whilst in care & remembers clearly his number. After a check on the files, it seems that the guy's partner has been accused of the attack on the girl. Part two is tonight in the UK BBC2 9pm. Homework - Imagine that you have been given custody of both Russell & Lester. How would you deal with both of their problems. Especially Lester, who to him sex is nothing to worry about. Could you teach him it was wrong in a non-loving enviroment. What about Russell, he's to spend the rest of his childhood in care, he's no family left to look after him.
