I disagree with you to some degree. Total honesty is definitely not a sham, just like being righteous is not despite the fact that nobody is totally in every situation. Now, I don't mean that anyone should blab all of their deepest secrets to everyone who says hello to them. But on the other hand, it is a sin to lie, and a half truth is the same thing (according to the Bible). So, using dodgy answers doesn't work either. I think that people forget that they can just tell someone that they don't want to talk about something. If they don't understand, that is their problem. You were honest and you have that freedom of knowing that you haven't sinned. On the other hand, half-truths or lies will lock you into a cage.

As for being totally honest with someone about everything... well, like anything else, it's something to be prayerful about. I have been totally honest about who I am, or at least mostly, with one person in real life. They weren't exactly happy about it, but I didn't expect them to be. The thing is, whatever they feel for me is real. It feels pretty fake when all of my relationships would crumble if they knew a little more about me. But with that person who knows, it just feels more... honest. Like I don't have to filter every bad or good thing they say with the secrets or misunderstandings that are below the surface.

You have experienced the bad side, which stinks. But a lot of the negative effects of what is going on wouldn't be there if everyone was totally honest with each other. Of course, they aren't, and we do have to live in this world. With God, though, we can overcome and go beyond it. I am not saying that you or anyone here has sinned by not being totally honest about every detail of who they are with anyone. It can be wrong in some situations, and maybe most. I just mean to say that we should keep our minds open to it and let God lead us. Also, just that we be careful not to tell half-turths, which I catch myself doing sometimes... more times than I'd like to admit.

Love,
hopesalive
