In reply to My Views On Honesty.... submitted by Chris on 2003-03-15 16:28:13, Saturday

Or something like that anyway.

Total honesty can be quite dangerous in today's society, I believe. People aren't used to it or expecting it, when you are. I've been in situations where I was faced with direct questions that I could not avoid and therefore was totally honest in my answer. Reactions to an honest answer vary somewhat. I've been met with disbelief, mocking laughter and anger.

I feel that a person who is the type that spills everything about themselves to just about anyone they meet, is cheating thier own self-worth and value as a person.

But oh, to be honest! The fact that when I was about 5yo and on a family holiday, I wet my pants in the car, shouldn't matter 30 + years later. Or should it? You guys never knew that about me but what difference does it make? Did you really want to hear that ? :)

I know you're digging bigger fish in this thread but I think that overall there are many, many things that have to be considered each and everytime it becomes necessary. If you really want to give the honest answer and be honest with others you have to find a way to make it all work.

Total honesty might be a sham if you want to pick nits about it. Still, there are ways to be honest and not out right lie at the same time. And , as you say, the only person you can be totally honest towards is yourself.
