The first thing is his age. I don't see where it is mentioned and that can make a differance in how you handle him. Yes, it may be expecting too much for him to carry the conversation. Something that was pointed out to me is this: If this was the first time you have chatted online with him, he may not be used to participating in a typed conversation. Saying thing verbally and writting them out are two differant things. When you were visiting with him, did the two of you go online at all, or use his computer at any time? If so, how fast of a typer was he? If he is slow, tell him that you know he is a slow typer and to take his time. Also allow for spelling errors. He maybe embarresed that he can not spell the words he wants to use. There is a young man I work with that is 16 yo. He had to drop out school in the 5th grade to help support his family. He never went back until recently. When he has been over visiting he likes taking part in online chats because he can practice his typing. In the short time that he has been doing he has been abble to increase his speed and correct his spelling of common words. He says that seeing the words written on the screen shows him how they are spelled correctly. Be paitient and encourage him to chat with you. You might want to remind him of some of the things you did when you there, mainly the things he found to be fun. Mav.
