I am starting a new activity at my school. I am organizing a group of about ten high school students to do weekly service work in the local community. I spoke with the volunteer coordinator of a nearby children/youth organization, and she said they are desperately in need of volunteers to help kids aged 6-11 with their homework, to play games with them, to befriend them, and to be good role-models. Many of these kids are from broken, neglectful, or abusive homes. I plan to volunteer along with my students. I also plan to meet regularly with them to discuss how things are going, to pray with them, and to talk about our spiritual growth through this effort. I am also having the students commit to keeping a journal and spending time in private prayer for those they serve and for their own guidance. I have never coordinated this kind of effort before, but I am looking forward to a challenging experience in spiritual growth for myself and for my students as we minister in the name of Jesus to children who are in need of love and attention.
