If your friend had been in touch with some ex-gays, he'd realize how serious an issue this is for many people. For that matter, the whole question of how to interpret the passages on homosexuality is, as you rightly point out, a test case for how to interpret all biblical passages. I think that a case can be made that Paul was talking about culture-specific matters as far as the hats and the preaching were concerned but not as far as homosexuality is concerned; or one can argue that Paul was wrong about hats and preaching but right about homosexuality. But one certainly can't argue that an issue which is tearing apart the Christian Church - not to mention tearing apart the lives of thousands of Christians - isn't an issue that the average Christian needs to deal with seriously. By the way, your sentence, "I figured he was distressed enough as it was, so I didn't point out . . ." is a classic example of Christian charity in action. Heather |
