If the server is on a public network (DALNET, EFNET, etc.) then the risk is that, except for technically savvy people who know how to play games with the system (not me), our hostmask is revealed. This can be used to trace us down to our ISP and in some cases our city, and can provide enough information to get a subpeona which will reveal everything about us. If the channel is on a private server (i.e. running on my computer, or yours) then the risk is "do we trust the server". Also, such a private server should be modified and recompiled to provide bogus "hostmask" information to anyone doing a "who" or "whois". Secret channels and invisible users protect users from people who are not in the channel, they do not protect from"guests" in the channel who have hostile intent. Another thing about IRC: Any communication OTHER THAN "DCC" communication is subject to being logged by a server. This makes some people nervous. Just my two bits. -d (david_tx on IRC) |
