Other groups I was "hooked" on: news.admin.net-abuse.*, {locality}.* (both are newsgroup hierarchies), and several low-traffic forums scattered across the web and USENET. I cleaned out my USENET newsgroup list today & permanently dropped some low-signal (read: high-flame/spam/junk) high-traffic groups, including some n.a.n-a.* and {locality}.* groups. I kept my favorites (all either low-traffic or high-signal) and have rejoined all of the remaining newsgroups but read and respond to many fewer messages than I used to. It looks like I'll probably rejoin RDC shortly, and BC after than (probably next week or the week after, with the first few days just looking through what I missed) but with some time limits so I don't wind up in this position again. One advantage to leaving for a week, peculiar to BC: I don't see the 3-hour "you are a bunch of perverts" flamefests which are frequently deleted the same day they are posted, AND I don't waste all evening trying to participate in a real-time conversation (remember "psych. help" with 273 responses? About 6 or 7 of us were doing that in near-real time.). -d (david_tx on IRC) |
