Hi Ray! I was just waiting for that comment! hehe

I try to fit all the jigs of the saw together to get the big picture. You've got the "flee from fornication" verses, you've got Jesus affirming that divorce is Wrong, then you've got this verse.

It's from mixing them altogether and trying to get out a consistent whole that gets me to interpret the verse that way. What you said make perfect sense too, and of course is right, but is that all there is to it?

I'll tell you a short story. Really I shouldn't, cause I have other things to do right now...well never mind ;) The first time I started really thinking hard about the place of premarital sex was when a girl at youth group years back asked me the question why two people committed to each can't have sex before the wedding. I could see she wasn't just trying to justify her own proclivities, she was sincerely trying to get a consistent and honest understanding of God's will from the Bible. She could see the bits about adultery, fine and clear, but what if it doesn't concern someone else's spouse, or, better, if it's with your own future spouse to whom you are committed? She couldn't find anything specifically referring to premarital sex, without going through those obscure words like "fornication", which doesn't intrinsically carry any specific meaning anyway.

It was in that context that I discovered this verse, at last a verse showing how God does take premarital sex seriously, without it being the different case of adultery or rape.

So I think my point still stands. Premarital sex is not to be considered an act carrying no consequences.

What would you have told the girl?

Love,

Fod
