How I detest that word - "onanism"! It (in my opinion) is such a blatant abuse of scripture. To my reading of the story of Onan, it seems to me completely and inarguably obvious that the sin of Onan was in failing to perform his fraternal duties to his deceased brother. He didn't want to sire any children that would not be counted as his, so when he obeyed the law by sleeping with his childless and widowed sister-in-law, he deliberately spilt his semen on the side, so there would be no child. His sin was contempt for the name of his brother. How anyone can read the "sin of masturbation" into this story is quite beyond me! The "spilling of his seed" happened while he was having sex with the woman! I've heard the same phrase "the sin of onanism" come out of my YF's mother's mouth, that's why I get so irate over this ridiculous twisting of Scripture. Well, at least the Catholics aren't calling it (masturbation) a "mortal sin" anymore. *phew* Hmmm...imagine if that same law that did Onan were valid today, though? Just as well my brothers have a handful of healthy sons... Curious how the Catholics are downplaying the teaching on angels, as a reaction against New Age teaching. Love, Fod |
