Hi Don,

I'm not certified in any area of ministry or treatment, so I can only give you my personal thoughts.

I believe that you should continue to be patient with your YF. The best you can do is offer your unconditional love to him, despite his depression. There is not much question that he does'nt feel good about himself. As Heather said below, a spilled glass of milk, or overturned wastebasket, as minor as it is on the surface, seems to reinforce one's feeling of worthlessness, and comes across as proof to them that they are worthless, and can do nothing right.

As you said, you have good times with him. I would continue those good times, and take every opportunity to make him feel good about himself when you are together. His depression, naturally, makes him insecure. The best you can do is to build up his security when you are with him. When he feels secure enough, he will talk to you. He needs to know he has your complete trust. Depending on the cause of his depression, this can take a long, long, time… perhaps years, so patience is a vital key to getting him to open up to you.

Just my 2¢.

Andy
