In reply to Does the word "recovery" trigger you? Submitted by Heather on June 23 1999 at 12:37:18

Hi Heather,

When I first "came out" to a counselor at the church I was a member of (I came out to him as a homosexual, not a boylover....I was nervous just calling myself gay, actually.), he insisted that I should "change" to heterosexual. He told me that I could do this if I really wanted to. But he didn't have a clue as to how. I tried in vain for months to pray, read, and believe myself into a hetero. Needless to sy, it didn't work. I wound up getting so frustrated that I returned to drinking. Thank God I bought my webtv unit and found out the truth about myself. I don't believe in sexual recovery anymore in that I do not believe that it is humanly possible to change one's sexual orientation. Just thinking of the pain I went through (mostly emotional) in that experience is enough to trigger a whole bunch of negative thoughts about God and church and such.

I have nothing against anyone who wants to try to change sexually. If they want to call it "recovery" then ok. But please, please leave me out of it.

So, having said that, I guess I would say it would probably be a good thing if you seperated the "recovery" stuff from the BL/GL stuff. I love your website and I do visit it from time to time to just look around and read whatever is new. In my humble opinion, yes I think that would be a good idea. However, if you don't do that and leave it the way it is, it is easy enough to ignore the parts I'm not too interested in.

I hope this helps you out.

Your friend in Christ,
Chris
